Leading military charity, Walking With The Wounded, is set to return to Grasmere in September to host their annual Cumbrian Challenge. The event which was postponed twice last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic is set to take place next month on 11 September 2021.
Over 175 teams of 4 will take part in Walking With The Wounded’s annual Cumbrian Challenge. This will be the charity’s first mass in-person event since the Cumbrian Challenge 2019. The walking event will see participants taking on the fells and experiencing a memorable and uplifting weekend whilst having the opportunity to meet the Grenadier Walk of Oman team who will be taking on the challenge as part of their training for WWTW’s next expedition.
WWTW Events Manager, James Davis, said
“WWTW’s 2020 Cumbrian Challenge event had to be postponed due to Covid-19. We have all had a tough 18-months and the WWTW team cannot wait to welcome our supporters back to Grasmere to take on an incredible challenge as a team and raise vital funds to support those who served. There is nothing quite like the Cumbrian Challenge. This year we have taken a number of extra precautions to keep our participants safe and we look forward to bringing everyone back together.”
Each team that takes part in the Cumbrian Challenge and raises funds, enables Walking With the Wounded to support more veterans and their family members. This includes veterans like Paul, who received support through the charity’s employment programme. Thanks to the support of his Employment Advisor, Paul secured a job as an NHS Hospital Porter. He commented,
“I love every single day that I go into work. Happiness is so much more important than money. If I can make a patient smile, then I have achieved my goal.”
Fergus Williams, CEO of WWTW, added,
“The last 18 months have been incredibly tough for everyone. The demand for our support services has grown and thanks to our supporters, we were able to provide employment and mental health support to 51 per cent more veterans compared to 2019. Events like the Cumbrian Challenge present a fantastic opportunity for us to meet our supporters, raise vital funds for the charity and give our supporters a chance to find out more about us and hear directly from the staff on the front line who deliver our services. We cannot wait to see everyone back on the hills in Grasmere.”
The Cumbrian Challenge is sponsored this year by BAE Systems, All Together Cumbria, FDM and Amazon.
